New Works with Here[begin] Dance Company

I am very happy to announce my new teaming with Zornitsa Stoyanova and her brand new Here[begin] Dance Company. I met Zornitsa several years back in a dance festival in Budapest, and when I found out about her moving to Philadelphia, I was very excited. In 2009, Zornitsa officially launched Here[begin] Dance Co in Philadelphia, and she is in full gear today. On Saturday April 11th, the company will present its latest work, a collaboration of the company director / choreographer Zornitsa Stoyanova, visual artist J. Marshall-Lively and percusssionist Toshi Makihara at Mascher Space Co-op (155 Cecil B. Moore Ave, Philadelphia). This piece explores the gory and creepy, looking for the line between lightheartedness and fear. Expect to see some hard core dancing, smearing of paint, use of masks, etc. Other choreographers that night are Liza Clark, Nora Gibson Performance Project, and Rebecca Patek.

    Solo365 Project

Solo365 Project: In 2009, I will perform a solo improvisation everyday at home, record them on video, and upload them onto YouTube. Each solo will be 5-10 minutes long, and there will be 365 solo performances through 2009. I will use my normal 1-drum-1-cymbal setting with various sticks and tools (see photos). The YouTube page is at http://www.youtube.com/Solo365Project

I have been performing less and less lately. I travel very little now because of my fulltime job, and obviously the booking is very limited in terms of the local scene. Though this is not much of my concern, it is amazing to remember that I used to hustle hard everyday for booking and promotion of my music. Since my marriage 2 years ago, my life style has changed quite a bit. Supporting my family became my primary focus, and for that I have been working non-music jobs. This is because of the necessity, but I also chose to live this way. Of course I would still like to travel when I can, and present my works at various places. But I don't have the luxury of having door-gig tours, losing money, etc.

If I want to make my house as the foundation of my life, then maybe I should also make my house the hub for my music activities. In my basement studio, I can try to face myself, perform daily solo improvisation and keep the record of my performances. This represents a change from the centrifugal approach to that of centripetal in terms of my music activities. This will be a different kind of "tour," and I would like to keep record of the process as my travel journal for the entire year of 2009.

It will not be easy to continue this project for one whole year. But I would like to try as much as I can. I will upload the video of the performances on YouTube beginning January 1, 2009. I hope you can stop by sometimes, and enjoy them. Solo365 Project
