Peterson-Barber-Makihara

Daniel Peterson is a multi-instrumentalist performer on most woodwinds, including saxello, saxophones and clarinets. He is well known in Philadelphia, because of his involvement with groups led by Odean Pope, Bobby Zankel and the Puzzlebox Experiment. Mike Barber has been studying music for over 25 years. A Canadian currently living in West Philadelphia, Barber describes himself as a free-jazz bassist who seeks to merge Zen meditation with his playing: "Zen practice and music practice are the same. Playing is meditation, meditation is playing." The concert also features Calvin Weston's Big Tree and Grass Hair Duo

Double Clutch
Michael Szekely, Dan Blacksberg, Todd Margasak & Toshi Makihara
at An Die Musik, 409 North Charles St, Second Floor, Baltimore (888) 221-6170
featuring Todd Margasak (cornet), Dan Blacksberg (trombone), Michael Szekely (drums, percussion) & Toshi Makihara (drums, percussion). Prior to the introduction of the synchromesh gearbox, back in the days when a car was a seat bolted atop a roaring engine and man and machine were united free from mechanical and digital mediation, a special music filled the highways and byways of this great country. That music was the whir and mesh of the double-clutch. Now as the seas rise with ice-melt and the ski slopes lie bald in the winter sunlight, four men have ditched their jalopies and transposed that old-time song into a creative, musical format. Hear Todd Margasak (cornet), Dan Blacksberg (trombone), Toshi Makihara (drums, percussion), Michael Szekely (drums, percussion), accelerate, decelerate, idle, depress the clutch and hit the throttle in improvised mini-symphonies. Thrill in the race and delight in the moments of failure, when the battery and horns fail to mesh and the stage reverberates with the grind and crash of a Double-clutch clinker. Baltimore Dubut!

States of Gravity & Light #2
Merian Soto/ Performance Practice
Merian Soto/ Performance Practice
at Christ Church Neighborhood House, 20 N. American Street, Philadelphia
gWatching this simple passage unfold with its certainty and luminousity, I thought that if I could dance like this, I would be the happiest dancer in the world.h- Eva Yaa Asantewaa, Gay City News. States of Gravity & Light #2 strikes a delicate balance between gravity and weightlessness, motion and stillness, thriving on the energy of nature. Bessie Award-winning choreographer Merian Soto developed her intriguing series of Dances with Branches as an improvisational movement practice, using the natural environment of Wissahickon Valley Park as inspiration. Dancers Noemi Segarra and Jumatatu Poe gracefully capture the organic rhythms of Sotofs vision. The piece is performed within a videoscape of the park, shot in a hand held style that emphasizes the relationship between the gaze and the movement of the body.
