At Shofuso, in the beautiful Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. Produced by Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Join Leah Stein Dance Company for a journey through the 17th Century Shofuso Japanese House and Garden in Fairmount Park with collaborators dancer/choreographer Roko Kawai, percussionist Toshi Makihara and, from Tokyo, performance artist Hideo Arai and vocalist Mika Kimula. Building upon a 2007 collaboration that began in Japan, the artists examine tradition and history against contemporary dialogue and aesthetics. Site-specific in nature, the performance will incorporate the permanently installed contemporary screen paintings of Hiroshi Senju and acknowledge the 150th Anniversary of the Iwakura Mission, one of the earliest Japanese delegations to visit America and Philadelphia.
